Alaskan Malamute Breeders code of Ethics I believe there is a strong misconception about what is required to be considered an ethical Alaskan Malamute dog breeder. It is definitely more than simply "putting two malamutes together and having Alaskan Malamute puppies. Any Malamute breeder of this sort, will not even pick up, let alone READ a book about the very breed of dog they intend to profit from. As for Candy Rock Kennels, if I discover that I am having a particular problem with Malamute health, the very first thing I will do is to begin researching and reading as much as I can about the Alaskan Malamutes and the health concerns they may face if its something I have not encountered before. There is more involved than simply creating puppies, and relying on your personal veterinarian to correct problems that are a direct result of uneducated breeding practices. I personally believe that within our disposable society, too many people have accepted this attitude in regards to their breeds. An animal born is a responsibility and a commitment that goes far beyond the first 8 weeks, and the potential payment from a customer. There is also some misconception as to what is labeled a giant and a standard malamute. There are not to different breeds but one of the same. What is considered a giant is anything that exceeds AKC standards as the norm. There is not such registration as a AKC Giant Alaskan Malamute. To AKC they are only Alaskan Malamutes. And it determining that you Alaskan malamute puppy is going to be standard or over Standard size you will want to consider the weight at 6 weeks old. In most cases a puppy weighting over 11 pounds will grow to be 110 lbs. A 14 lb. 6 week old puppy should grow up to be 140 lbs full grow. And all puppies born in a litter all will not be all giants or above AKC standards. Height also plays a roll in detemining as well. a 21 inch dog that weights 100 plus pounds is not a giant but a fat dog. Check out the height as well on the AKC standards link below. Remember a Giant is nothing more that an Alaskan Malamute that is over AKC Standards. To see what AKC stardards are please click on the button to the right. |

We started our Kennel back in 1994 and at that time there were less than 2,000 purebred Alaskan Malamute registered with AKC. Today the total has at least tripled with other registrations coming into play such as ACA - http://www.acacanines.com, CKC- http://www.continentalkennelclub.com/ and more. We started out as a rescue-breeder making rescue our main agenda. I look at advertisements and it seems as though for the right price anyone can buy a couple dogs and start a breeding program. There is a lot of different views as to what is considered a puppy mill and what is considered a back yard breeder. And just because we have sites that put signs like "No Puppy MILL" and saying like " We do not sell to brokers" doesn't mean they are not puppy mills. It is easy for anyone to buy a pup but it takes someone special to take on an older dog. I see breeders back into breeding again that have been previously shut down by the human society and breeders that had the heart to buy out these kennels to save the dogs. Please check with breeders and see if they may have some return puppies or retired dogs if there is anyway that you can take on an adult. I have posted web site links so that you can go about looking up were a lot of the pups are coming from. PLEASE DONATE TO LOCAL SHELTERS. Anything that you have will help. And please take the time to research the breed and see if an Alaskan Malamute puppy is what you want. They are not a breed for everyone and do require TRAINING and a strong Alpha roll model. Our society has become a throw away society in that if it doesn't work we just throw it away. Please be cautious of breeders that alway have multi litters all the time. Take the time to watch and to see pictures of where your adults live and please take the time to click on the links above and see where a lot of these pups are coming from, get reference's. Times are hard and there are a lot of so called breeders starting up. With things being the way that they are I can not rescue or take in any other dogs than my own. I hope everyone takes the time to check out each kennel that they buy from and if you can not visit, please get reference's. |
