Malamutes with Children

One of the reasons that malamutes go back into rescue or are re homed is because of a new
child in the family for some reason some think that because they are having a baby that they
can not have both, not true.  Malamutes, if raised properly and socialized with  children are
great companions for children.  They are even protective and loving toward babies.  But you
must do your job too.  First, you must prepare an "only dog" for the birth of his sibling pack
member, then you must continue to make him feel a part of the family, and lastly you must
continue to be the benevolent alpha you've always been - firm and fair.   And when the child
in old enough,  teach the CHILD manners too!   There is no good reason a malamute must
be given away or stuck to an  outdoor existence just because of a baby.  If he is, you haven't
done YOUR job preparing for the new family member.  A way to start

Bringing your Malamute Home:

Before you bring your Alaskan malamute home, there are supplies that you will need and to
puppy proof your home if you plan to leave him inside. Keep the yard clear of debris and
make sure you have all the human toys off the floor.

The bed
You want to make a place for him to sleep. If in the house somewhere that is dark and if
outside someplace that is warn. Where ever you plan to have him sleep, be sure that this is
going to alway be his bed. Malamutes don't like change. And alway remember that puppies
are like babies. If they sleep all day they will be up all night. The Alaskan Malamute puppy
just left a home where he was with siblings that kept waking him up at night to play.

Doggie Doors

Life is so much better with it. Since Alaskan Malamutes like to be out more than in , this will
leave it up to them when they want to be outside and since all my adults and pups are
already use to doggie doors you will have a lot better success with house training them.

Fencing

Fencing for a malamute must be strong and at least 6 ft high. If possible you should bury the
wire in the ground. If we have problems with dogs getting out. It is so easy to lay down
fencing or hog panels and cover with dirt of gravel. If you want your yard to look nice you
may want to consider another breed. Malamute's love to dig. And it is not alway to get out.

Kennels

If you are thinking that an inside cage will be all that you need please thing about what the
size of the dog will end up being. Those cages, can not hold a malamute adult. You should
either invest in a kennel to set up in the yard or a specific room in the house. Just remember
when Malamutes get bored they get destructive.  Especially during the day when they can
hear others outside. If you don't want to pup a kennel up outside you could try a garage or a
basement. Don't buy those cheap build panels. Got somewhere that you can buy the AKC
panels or something similar. Welded, not tied together with ties that you child could talk apart
if he wanted to.
If you want the cheaper panels please be sure to reinforce them with hog panels for farm and
feed stores. Be sure the kennel has a bar in the middle and be sure that to put the bar inside
so the dog is pushing against it not with it. If you put the kennel outside be sure to lay fence
or wire if not concrete under it so that the dog can not dig out. It can be covered with dirt or
with gravel.
